Understanding Trauma and Dissociation

Trauma can take many forms. Whether it stems from a single event, ongoing stress, relational wounds, or systemic oppression, its impact can be profound and long-lasting. Trauma often affects how we experience safety, relationships, and even our connection to ourselves. It can leave us feeling stuck, disconnected, or overwhelmed, as though parts of us are frozen in the past.

For some, trauma may lead to dissociation — a natural and protective response that can manifest as feeling numb, detached, or “not fully present.” You might experience gaps in memory, difficulty identifying your emotions, or a sense of being fragmented. These experiences, while adaptive at the time of the trauma, can sometimes interfere with your ability to fully engage in your life and relationships.

The journey to healing involves reclaiming your sense of safety, reconnecting with your body and emotions, and integrating the parts of yourself that feel wounded or disconnected.

How We Work Together

Healing trauma and dissociation is a sensitive and deeply personal process, one that requires a supportive, compassionate, and collaborative approach. In our work together, we’ll move at your pace, ensuring that each step feels safe and manageable.

My approach is grounded in the following principles and practices:

  • Parts-Based Healing: Drawing from Internal Family Systems (IFS) and ego state therapy, we will gently explore the parts of you that carry the wounds of trauma or that developed protective strategies to keep you safe. By building a relationship with these parts, we can reduce inner conflict and create a greater sense of integration and self-compassion.
  • Somatic and Nervous System Regulation: Trauma lives in the body, not just the mind. Using techniques informed by polyvagal theory and sensorimotor therapy, we’ll work on creating safety within your nervous system. This may involve grounding exercises, breathwork, or gentle somatic awareness practices to help you reconnect with your body and release stored tension.
  • Trauma-Informed EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a powerful tool for processing traumatic memories and reducing their emotional charge. Using EMDR, we’ll work to reprocess the painful experiences that keep you stuck in patterns of fear or avoidance, enabling you to move forward with greater freedom.
  • Creating a Sense of Safety: Our sessions will prioritize building a foundation of safety, trust, and stabilization. Before delving into deeper work, we’ll ensure you feel resourced and supported, with tools to manage distressing emotions or triggers as they arise.
  • Empowerment Through Collaboration: You are the expert in your own experience, and our work together will always center on your needs and goals. I aim to help you feel empowered in your healing journey, offering guidance and tools while honoring your autonomy every step of the way.

The Journey Toward Wholeness

Healing from trauma and dissociation is not about erasing the past but about integrating its lessons and finding ways to move forward with greater clarity, self-compassion, and connection. It’s a journey toward reclaiming the parts of yourself that feel lost, rediscovering your inner strength, and building a life that feels authentic and whole.

This process takes courage, and it’s natural to have questions or doubts along the way. I am here to support you in every step, offering a safe and affirming space for exploration and healing.
